VBS1 has potential applications across the entire training and experimentation spectrum. The product was initially developed for federal, state, and local government agencies for military, law enforcement, homeland defence, and first responder training. However, since its conception in 2001 VBS1 has matured into a flexible and powerful synthetic environment suitable for a wide range of purposes.

Military Training

VBS1 is as an out-of-the-box training solution able to simulate a wide range of situations at the tactical level. VBS1 is generic by default (not customised for a particular organisation or country) but BIA can modify the product to suit specific requirements easily, quickly and at a realistic price. Without customisation, examples of the types of training possible with VBS1 are as follows:

  • Combined arms training
  • Small team tactics
  • MOUT
  • Infantry minor tactics
  • Navigation
  • Mission simulation (eg aviation elements practicing LZ procedures)
  • Crowd control
  • Convoy escort training*
  • UAV training*
  • IED training*
  • Forward observer / all arms call for fire*
  • Mortar training*
  • Vehicle checkpoints and area control*
  • Helicopter loadmaster training*

* - requires one or more add-on modules

VBS1 is currently used for military training by the following organisations:

  • Australian Defence Force
  • United States Marine Corps
  • United States National Guard
  • United States Secret Service
  • Isreali Defence Force

VBS1 can be customised to suit a specific training or analytical requirement. For example, in late 2005 BIA developed (as part of terrain pack 3) the As Samawah and Al Muthanna terrain areas for the ADF. The ADF used the terrain areas for limited mission rehearsal, troop training and worst case scenario analysis prior to the deployment of Al Muthanna Task Group 2 (AMTG2).

Experimentation and Analysis

VBS1 is an excellent platform for conducting experimentation and/or analysis, given the flexible nature of the engine and data logging capability. Any imaginable scenario can be created in the VBS1 scenario editor, and all events and interactions are automatically recorded by the VBS1 AAR system.

VBS1 has been used for extensive experimentation by the Virtual Environments and Simulation Lab, part of the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy. VBS1 was used to assess different Infantry Section structures in the Virtual Infantry Section Experiment (VISE), and also used to examine team play tactics in various custom-built scenario types.

All aspects of VBS1 can be customised depending on the analytical requirement - everything from vehicle speed to weapon muzzle velocity can be easily (and quickly) modified.

Visualisation, Walkthroughs and 3D Modelling

The VBS1 product is perfectly suited for non-military use and BIA is available to develop new terrain areas, flythroughs/walkthroughs and 3D models for any purpose. BIA has experience in developing realistic terrain areas from topographic maps, satellite images and digital photos. Entire terrain areas can be developed in a matter of weeks provided the appropriate imagery is made available. 3D models can be developed in a variety of formats and at very high levels of detail.
